Yesterday, I asked everyone what problems they encountered while working from home and received hundreds of replies. Summarizing, I found that there are seven common issues:
- Children are too clingy
Young mothers must have encountered this problem, and usually, the father is an unreliable teammate.
Have a separate room, close the door, and keep the child from seeing you. It's best to lock the door to reduce distractions.
When the child is old enough to understand, explain to them that mom is working to earn money, and if the work is done well, there will be money; if not, there won't be money to buy toys or treats.
Have the father or other relatives play games with the child, such as Sudoku, toys, or board games. If there's no other option, let them watch cartoons or play on the iPad.
Consider spending a few minutes with the child every hour before returning to work.
- Internet speed is too slow
Slow internet speed is a hardware issue that can't be helped. In urgent situations, consider using mobile data on your phone and connecting your laptop to the phone's hotspot. The speed is usually better in the city, but if you're in a rural area or have poor 4G signal, there's not much you can do.
I prepared a ThinkPad X1 specifically, which can take a SIM card, and I subscribed to a year of high-speed data, so if there are network issues, I can directly use the mobile network.
- Feeling lazy and unable to get into the work mode
Don't work in pajamas; try to wear work clothes to help get into the work mindset.
Before starting work, establish your own focus ritual to help concentrate better.
Set deadlines: When facing projects without time limits, having someone set a deadline for you can help focus your attention on that time point, making it easier to complete your work.
Prioritize the most difficult tasks: At the start of the day, tackle the hardest tasks on your list.
Focus on starting: When procrastination hits, just commit to working on a task for 5 minutes; it's easier to continue afterward.
Reduce distractions: Avoid constantly scrolling through news; it's best to uninstall Weibo and mute irrelevant but frequently messaging groups on WeChat.
- Files cannot sync in real-time
Question: If I copy files home, I will keep adding new files, and when I go back, I have to copy them again. If I don't keep updating, the files on the cloud won't match those in the office, and I can't update everything from scratch every few days.
I recommend using Nutstore for important file synchronization, website: (https://www./)
- Handing over tasks to colleagues is difficult.
Spend 10-15 minutes every morning for a stand-up meeting to confirm the progress from the previous day and the tasks for the day, assigning them to specific individuals.
It's best to require daily work logs and weekly summaries. Project or team managers should spend half an hour daily to confirm progress. If problems arise, a project team of 6-8 people is ideal; don't exceed 15 people. If it does, split into multiple groups, keeping each group under 15.
In collaborative software, it's best to see each person's tasks and progress. Task assignments should be realistic, with clear and specific tasks for the week.
- Incomplete materials at home make it hard to work
Remember to sync your daily work materials to personal cloud storage or note-taking apps like Youdao after returning to the office. Develop the habit of keeping work materials synced so that you can work as long as there's internet access.
- How to improve efficiency at home
Create a daily checklist
Calendar:
What’s on today’s calendar? What deadlines are coming up in the next three to five days?
Are there any appointments to check? Is it in a paper diary?
Big rocks:
What tasks need to be completed today to feel accomplished?
Which tasks do I want to cross off?
What big rocks should I pay attention to and check what's underneath?
Resistance:
Among these tasks, which one am I most likely to avoid? Why?
Attention management:
Among these tasks, which one requires my focused attention and active engagement? Which can be completed during less focused periods?
Dependency:
Do the tasks I choose to do require specific time, personnel, or resources to complete?
Tools section:
I saw someone share a collection of remote collaboration tools in a WeChat group, and it seems comprehensive, so I’m sharing it with everyone. I couldn't find the original source; if anyone knows, please let me know.
- Online collaborative document tools
